Imperial College London
Founded 1907. STEM-only London university from Prince Albert's South Kensington vision, penicillin's home.
Overview
Imperial formed by merging the Royal College of Science, Royal School of Mines, and City and Guilds College on Albertopolis land beside the Albert Hall. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin at the affiliated St Mary's hospital in 1928; the medical school joined Imperial in 1997. With about 22,000 students it teaches only science, engineering, medicine, and business. Fourteen Nobel laureates tie to the college including Andre Geim's graphene. The Queen's Tower, all that remains of an older institute, centers the campus. Imperial regularly ranks top-three in the UK behind Oxbridge.
