Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich
Founded 1472. Munich's giant, over 40 Nobel affiliates from Planck's quantum era onward.
Overview
Founded in Ingolstadt and moved twice, LMU settled in Munich in 1826 under King Ludwig I. Max Planck studied and later taught nearby, Werner Heisenberg earned his doctorate here, and more than 40 Nobel laureates affiliate across physics, chemistry, and medicine. The main building on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz honors the White Rose resistance students. LMU enrolls about 50,000 students, among Europe's largest enrollments. Partnering with TUM and the Max Planck Society, it anchors Munich's research cluster.
