Overview
Founded in 1822 by Lord Burghersh and granted a royal charter in 1830, the Royal Academy of Music is the oldest conservatoire in Britain. Its home on Marylebone Road, beside Regent's Park, holds concert halls, an opera theatre and a museum, along with a collection of valuable stringed instruments that includes violins by Stradivari. Alumni include Arthur Sullivan, Simon Rattle and Annie Lennox, and Elton John attended its junior academy as a boy. It is a constituent college of the University of London and trains performers, composers and conductors.
