University of St Andrews
Founded 1413. Scotland's oldest university, on the North Sea coast in the home of golf.
Overview
Teaching began around 1410, and a papal bull from Benedict XIII in 1413 gave the university its full status, making St Andrews the oldest in Scotland and the third oldest in the English-speaking world. Its small coastal town is also the home of golf, with the Old Course beside the West Sands. Traditions include red undergraduate gowns, the pier walk and Raisin Weekend, which ends in a foam fight in St Salvator's Quad. Prince William met Catherine Middleton while both were students there. With only around 10,000 students, it consistently ranks near the top of UK league tables.
