Australian National University

Research UniversityAustralia

Founded 1946. Postwar creation of Australia's parliament, Nobel-dense research campus in Canberra.

Overview

ANU was created by act of parliament in 1946 as Australia's national research institution, unique in being built by the state for scholarship first. Its research schools in physical sciences and astronomy drew international stars early, and the Mount Stromlo Observatory served global astronomy until the 2003 bushfires. Brian Schmidt's supernova cosmology won the 2011 physics Nobel from ANU grounds. Six Nobel laureates overall tie to the campus. Undergraduates arrived permanently after 1960, adding colleges to the research institutes. About 18,000 students share a campus of eucalyptus and kangaroos.
