Yale University
Founded 1701. Third-oldest US university, home of top-ranked law and drama schools.
Overview
Chartered in the Connecticut colony, Yale moved to New Haven in 1716 and built the collegiate gothic campus that defines its image. Yale Law School has topped nearly every ranking since the genre began, and the drama school shaped Meryl Streep and Paul Newman. Five US presidents studied here, and the Yale secret societies remain a cultural legend. Sterling Memorial Library and the Beinecke Rare Book Library hold millions of volumes. With about 6,600 undergraduates, Yale pairs college-scale teaching with research muscle.
