Columbia University
Founded 1754. New York City Ivy, administers the Pulitzer Prizes, core curriculum pioneer.
Overview
Founded as King's College by royal charter, Columbia adopted its current name after independence. Its core curriculum, teaching primary texts from antiquity onward, set a template dozens of universities copied. The Pulitzer Prizes are administered from Columbia's journalism school, and the university anchored the Manhattan Project's early physics, with the first US nuclear fission experiment performed under Pupin Hall. Its Morningside Heights campus and Washington Heights medical center bookend Manhattan academic life. Columbia enrolls about 36,000 students and anchors a vast research hospital network.
