Nanyang Technological University
Founded 1955. From a Chinese-language college to a top-fifteen technical university.
Overview
Nanyang University opened in 1955 as the Chinese-language university of Southeast Asia, funded by rubber tycoon Tan Lark Sye and donations from taxi drivers to trishaw pullers. Merged into the National University in 1980, its campus rebirthed as NTI and gained full university status as NTU in 1991. The Hive learning hub's dim sum stack design and the sports hall's bamboo wave won global architecture awards. About 33,000 students make it Singapore's second pillar beside NUS. NTU ranks regularly in the world's top fifteen engineering schools. Smart campus trials test autonomous transport daily.
