Carnegie Mellon University
Founded 1900. Andrew Carnegie's schools became the world capital of computer science and robotics.
Overview
Andrew Carnegie founded technical schools for Pittsburgh workers; the merger with Mellon Institute in 1967 created today's university. Its computer science school, formed 1988, ranks at the top globally, and the Robotics Institute founded 1979 was the first of its kind. Herbert Simon and Allen Newell launched artificial intelligence research here in the 1950s. CAPTCHA was invented by faculty, and the first autonomous driving programs ran on NavLab vehicles. The Drama school, from the Carnegie lineage of the era, trained Holly Hunter and Ted Danson among others. About 15,000 students study across Pittsburgh and Qatar branches.
