Overview
Beginning as the Daniel Sieff Research Institute in 1933 under Chaim Weizmann, the institute focuses purely on graduate science, awarding no bachelor degrees. Its faculty members and alumni include chemistry Nobel laureates Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko for ubiquitin and Ada Yonath for the ribosome. The Koffler accelerator and solar tower run national infrastructure. About 3,500 students study in Rehovot south of Tel Aviv. The tech transfer arm, Yeda, pioneered Israeli academic commercialization.
