University of Copenhagen
Founded 1479. Denmark's oldest university, Niels Bohr's quantum mechanics headquarters.
Overview
Chartered by Christian I, Copenhagen opened in a bishop's palace and grew across the old city. Niels Bohr founded his institute here in 1921, hosting Heisenberg, Dirac, and the quantum revolution's weekly seminars; the 1922 and 1975 physics Nobels tie to the building. Tycho Brahe and Hans Christian Orsted walked earlier halls, Orsted discovering electromagnetism in a lecture demonstration. Nine Nobel laureates affiliate overall. The university runs Europe's oldest student observatory still teaching. About 37,000 students study across four campuses.
