Duke University
Founded 1838. Tobacco fortune turned research university, medical center and basketball powerhouse.
Overview
Beginning as a rural Methodist school, Duke was rebuilt in Durham with Washington Duke's tobacco fortune and named for his son James, whose endowment created the modern university. Its gothic west campus, built from Duke stone, ranks among America's most photographed. The medical center is a global leader in medicine and nursing, and the science and engineering quad drives biotech spinoffs. Mike Krzyzewski's basketball program won five national titles and made Cameron Indoor Stadium a cathedral of the sport. Trinity College of Arts and Sciences anchors about 6,800 undergraduates.
