Overview
Founded as a private school in Lausanne in 1853 and elevated to federal institute status in 1969, EPFL became continental Europe's most discussed riser in global rankings. Its campus by Lake Geneva hosts about 12,000 students, more than half of them international at master's level. The Swiss Supercomputing Centre, CSCS, operates national-scale machines in partnership. Solar Impulse's round-the-world solar airplane team was led by EPFL engineers. The Rolex Learning Center's undulating floors won architectural fame. EPFL anchors the Lake Geneva innovation arc from Lausanne to Geneva.
