ETH Zurich
Founded 1855. Swiss federal polytechnic where Einstein trained; about 20 Nobel affiliates.
Overview
Founded by the new Swiss federal state to educate engineers and teachers, ETH Zurich grew into continental Europe's top-ranked university. Albert Einstein earned his diploma here in 1901 and returned as professor during the relativity years; his chalk slates remain on display. Twenty-two Nobel laureates in total tie to ETH, including Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen's student lineage and Richard Ernst's NMR chemistry. The main building overlooks Zurich old town from the Polyterrasse. About 25,000 students study in the heart of Switzerland's economic engine. The polyball each November fills the halls with thousands.
