Overview

Founded as the Royal Academy of Turku and moved to Helsinki after the 1827 fire, the university carried Finland's national awakening, and its anthem's composer taught its music. Artturi Virtanen won the 1945 chemistry Nobel for fodder preservation from its labs. Linus Torvalds wrote early Linux while a student here in 1991, and the unix room plaque marks it. The main building faces the Senate Square ensemble by Engel. Helsinki enrolls about 35,000 students across 11 faculties and remains Finland's top-ranked university.
