Overview
Founded as an English-medium university under colonial rule, HKU opened with the medical college that graduated Sun Yat-sen in 1892 lineage, the founding father of modern China. Its Main Building elevation survived occupation and typhoons alike. Its medical faculty led early regional research, and the Li Ka Shing faculty of medicine anchored SARS-era epidemiology. HKU ranks among Asia's top comprehensive universities with some 30,000 students. Its Centennial campus extension opened 2012 behind the original core.
