Overview
The Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru was founded in 1909 with support from the industrialist Jamsetji Tata, the Maharaja of Mysore and the colonial government. In 1933 C. V. Raman became its first Indian director, drawing a generation of physicists to the campus. The institute concentrates on graduate research in science and engineering, adding an undergraduate program in 2011. Its leafy campus in the north of the city houses departments of aerospace, materials, chemistry and biology whose work has supported India's space and scientific programs, and it is consistently ranked the top research institution in India.
