Johns Hopkins University
Founded 1876. First US research university on the German model, hospital and public health pioneer.
Overview
Named for its benefactor, a Baltimore merchant, Johns Hopkins adopted the Humboldtian ideal of teaching through research. Its hospital opened 1889 and its school of public health in 1916, both firsts in America that still top their fields. The university pioneered medical residency training and runs the world's largest research budget among US universities year after year. The Applied Physics Laboratory built spacecraft instruments from New Horizons to Parker Solar Probe. Wilmer Eye Institute and the Peabody Conservatory round out a uniquely wide portfolio.
