Juilliard School
Founded 1905. America's premier performing arts conservatory at Lincoln Center.
Overview
Frank Damrosch founded the Institute of Musical Art in 1905 to keep American musicians from crossing the Atlantic for training. The Juilliard Graduate School merged with it in 1926, and the school moved to Lincoln Center in 1969. Its dance, drama, and music divisions train about 800 students with a hiring-level faculty of working performers. Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Robin Williams number among alumni; Miles Davis studied here briefly before bebop called. The Peter Jay Sharp Theater hosts hundreds of free student recitals yearly. Admission rates in single digits define its conservatory status.
