KAIST
Founded 1971. Korea's MIT analog, first research-oriented Korean science university.
Overview
Founded with US aid as the Korea Advanced Institute of Science, KAIST was created to industrialize Korean technology without sending students abroad. It pioneered research-oriented graduate education in Korea. Its graduates power Korea's semiconductor and display industries. About 10,000 students study in Daejeon's Daedeok innopolis heart. The annual KAIST racing teams and humanoid robots display public engineering pride. Tuition was free for decades, an experiment that ended in the 2000s.
