Seoul National University
Founded 1946. Korea's flagship national university, gatekeeper of the elite since independence.
Overview
Established by national law in 1946 from colonial-era colleges, SNU became Korea's uncontested flagship. Its law school and economics graduates staffed the developmental state that lifted Korea from war to OECD rank. Ban Ki-moon graduated, and Kim Young-sam and Lee Myung-bak among presidents as well. The Gwanak campus opened in 1975 on a mountain rim housing most of its 28,000 students, and the spring cherry blossom road marks each new semester. SNU anchors Korea's university hierarchy that entrance exams orbit.
