Karolinska Institutet
Founded 1810. The institute that awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Overview
Founded as an academy for army surgeons after a war, Karolinska grew into one of the world's foremost medical universities. Its Nobel Assembly decides the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine each October, a role held since 1901. Five of its own researchers have won that prize, including the prostaglandin discoveries of Sune Bergstrom and Bengt Samuelsson. The century-old lecture hall tradition continued through Solna campuses into the Neo building's modern era. About 7,000 students study medicine and biomedicine beside the Karolinska hospital. Janssen's COVID vaccine lineage ran through its researchers' mRNA partnerships.
