Overview
The Mayo brothers formalized their father's Minnesota practice into the world's first integrated, salaried group practice, then created the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research in 1915 with the University of Minnesota. Mayo medical school graduated its first class in 1972 through the modern college. The needs of the patient come first is the organizing credo. Residency training here set patterns copied nationwide across specialties. The Rochester campus, plus Arizona and Florida branches, trains about 4,000 residents and fellows at any time. Its rankings in patient care and research sit consistently at the top.
