Overview
Founded by decree of Elizabeth I at Mikhail Lomonosov's urging, Moscow State became the Russian Empire's and then the Soviet Union's flagship. The 240 meter main building on Sparrow Hills, a 1953 Stalinist tower, remains Europe's tallest university building and the anchor of the city skyline. Kolmogorov shaped modern probability in its mechanics-mathematics faculty. Landau's theoretical physics school operated in its orbit. Eleven Nobel laureates tie to the university. About 40,000 students study across the Lenin Hills campus.
