Northwestern University
Founded 1851. Lakefront powerhouse in journalism, management and theater, the Big Ten's only private member.
Overview
Founded in 1851 by Methodist leaders including John Evans, Northwestern was named for the old Northwest Territory and sits on the shore of Lake Michigan in Evanston, just north of Chicago. The Medill School of Journalism, the Kellogg School of Management and the School of Communication rank among the best in their fields. It is the only private university in the Big Ten Conference. Stephen Colbert and Julia Louis-Dreyfus both studied in its theater programs. The Feinberg School of Medicine and the Pritzker School of Law occupy a second campus in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood.
