New York University
Founded 1831. Largest private US university by enrollment, global campuses from Abu Dhabi to Shanghai.
Overview
Albert Gallatin and town fathers founded NYU to serve the merchant class excluded from Columbia. Its Washington Square campus absorbed Greenwich Village rather than walling it off, and the university now enrolls more students than any private US school, above 50,000. Tisch School of the Arts trained Scorsese, Spike Lee, and Lady Gaga's cohort; Stern anchors Wall Street recruiting; the Courant Institute drives applied mathematics. Satellite degree campuses run in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. Bobst Library's atrium and Washington Square arch frame student life.
