Rhode Island School of Design
Founded 1877. Leading US art and design school, founded by women, partner of Brown University.
Overview
RISD was founded in 1877 after Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf led the Rhode Island Women's Centennial Commission to invest its exhibition profit in art education. The Nature Lab's 80,000 specimens teach drawing from biology. About 2,500 students pursue BFA and MFA degrees beside Brown University, with cross-registration between them. Alumni shaped modern American design, from glass artist Dale Chihuly to Airbnb's founding designers and Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane. The RISD Museum, founded with the school, holds 100,000 works. Wintersession's intense single-course month is a studio rite.
