Overview
UCLA began in 1919 as the Southern Branch of the University of California and moved to its Westwood campus in 1929, where Royce Hall and Powell Library frame the central quad. It receives more freshman applications than any other American university, well over 100,000 a year. John Wooden's basketball teams won ten national championships, part of one of the largest hauls of NCAA team titles in the country. The first message over the ARPANET, precursor to the internet, was sent from Leonard Kleinrock's UCLA lab in 1969. Its film school, medical center and law school anchor a campus of more than 45,000 students.
