University of Cape Town
Founded 1829. Oldest South African university, site of the first human heart transplant's hospital network.
Overview
Beginning as the South African College, UCT received full university status in 1918 on the Groote Schuur estate beneath Table Mountain. Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first human heart transplant in 1967 at the affiliated Groote Schuur Hospital. The university was a rare open enclave during apartheid, and its 2015-16 statue protests ignited global debates on campus memory. Some 29,000 students study on Africa's southernmost top-ranked campus.
