University of Sao Paulo
Founded 1934. Latin America's research heavyweight by nearly every output measure.
Overview
Fusion of the old Law Academy and new science faculties created USP in 1934, and it has led Latin American research output since. Its institutes produced nuclear physics pioneers like Cesar Lattes, who co-discovered the pi meson. About 60,000 students study across the Butanta campus core and satellite cities. The university runs Brazil's largest hospital complex and its publishing house floods the country with textbooks. Sociologist-president Fernando Cardoso taught here before politics. The IPA and each zona universitaria knit Sao Paulo's west side.
