University of Vienna
Founded 1365. One of Europe's oldest German-speaking universities, Freud and Schrodinger's home.
Overview
Founded by Duke Rudolph IV, Vienna is the oldest university in the German-speaking world by continuous operation. Its medical school drew Sigmund Freud, and the physics lineage from Boltzmann through Schrodinger to quantum theory seminars defined early 20th century science. Fifteen Nobel laureates tie to the university. The main ceremonial hall hosted Klimt-era ceiling painters still intact. The Vienna Circle of logical positivism met around its institutes between the wars. Some 85,000 students make it the largest in the German-speaking world.
