Wellesley College
Founded 1870. Leading US women's college, alma mater of Hillary Clinton and Soong Mei-ling.
Overview
Founded by Henry Fowle Durant to prepare women for great conflicts as he put it, Wellesley enrolls about 2,400 students on a lakeside campus designed by Frederick Law Olmsted's firm. Its alumnae include Hillary Clinton, Madeleine Albright, and Soong Mei-ling of twentieth century China's leadership family. Katharine Lee Bates wrote America the Beautiful after a Colorado summer teaching from here. The Sylvia and William science center anchors outsized research output for college size. Wellesley's cross-registration with MIT and Babson extends range. The hoop rolling graduation tradition predates most campus rituals anywhere.
