Overview
Fudan was founded in 1905 by the Jesuit-educated scholar Ma Xiangbo, its name drawn from a classical line about the light of sun and moon renewing day after day. It became a national university during the 1940s and merged with Shanghai Medical University in 2000, giving it one of China's strongest medical schools. Along with Peking and Tsinghua it belongs to the C9 League of elite Chinese research universities. Its main campus in Shanghai's Yangpu district hosts leading programs in journalism, economics, mathematics and the life sciences, and it appears regularly near the top of Asian rankings.
