Tsinghua University
Founded 1911. Founded on Boxer indemnity funds, China's engineering and political leadership source.
Overview
Tsinghua opened in 1911 on the gardens of a former prince, funded by remitted Boxer indemnity money as a prep school for students heading to America. It grew into China's strongest engineering university and its leadership nursery: Xi Jinping and Hu Jintao both studied here, as did Zhu Rongji. The Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology and the supercomputing lineage anchor research. About 50,000 students study beside Yuanmingyuan's old summer palace ruins. The motto of self-discipline and social commitment hangs in the auditorium where May Fourth echoes reached.
