Peking Union Medical College
Founded 1917. Rockefeller-founded medical school, China's most selective medical program.
Overview
The Rockefeller Foundation chartered PUMC in 1917, building a Chinese campus of marble and green roofs that opened fully in 1921 as the country's premier modern medical school. Its curriculum of English instruction and elite admission set Chinese medical education's gold standard. The college merged operations with Tsinghua in a joint enrollment scheme from 2006, admitting through Tsinghua's exam stream. About 3,000 students study beside the Fuwai and Cancer hospitals within its network. The old assembly hall's murals record founders' meetings. PUMC hospitals anchor Beijing's tertiary care.
