Peking University
Founded 1898. Successor to the Imperial University, heart of the May Fourth Movement.
Overview
Founded as the Imperial University of Peking during reformist 1898, it became Peking University in 1912 and China's premier comprehensive institution. Its campus on former Yanjing gardens at Weiming Lake is the most photographed in the country. The May Fourth Movement launched from its gates in 1919, and Mao Zedong worked in its library. Literature, mathematics, and physics faculties hold national legend status. Beida enrolls some 40,000 students and anchors Zhongguancun tech corridors. Its red gates and stone lions frame every graduate photograph.
